"Better late than never"라는 표현은 어떤 일을 제때 하지 못했더라도, 그것을 "아예 하지 않는 것보다는 늦게라도 하는 것이 더 낫다"는 의미입니다. 이 표현은 주로 누군가가 어떤 일을 미루거나 지연시킨 후에 이를 시작하려고 할 때, 늦게라도 시작하는 것이 긍정적인 선택임을 강조할 때 사용됩니다. 때로는 시간이 지났더라도 일단 시작하는 것이 더 낫다는 메시지를 전달하기 위해 사용됩니다.

 

이 표현은 우리가 일상 생활에서 종종 놓치는 기회나 실패한 마감일을 다룰 때 유용하게 쓰입니다. 예를 들어, 누군가가 오랫동안 미뤄온 프로젝트나 과제를 결국 시작했을 때 "better late than never"라고 말할 수 있습니다. 즉, 시작이 늦었지만 포기하지 않고 시도하는 것이 중요하다는 의미를 담고 있습니다.

Jieun: I can’t believe I missed the registration deadline for the conference.

지수: 아, 정말! 정말 아쉽네. 하지만 뭐, 늦었지만 아예 안 하는 것보단 낫지, 그치?  

Jieun: Yeah, I guess you’re right. I should’ve signed up earlier.  

지은: 응, 네 말이 맞아. 더 일찍 등록했어야 했는데.

지수: 맞아. 그리고 누가 알아, 내년에는 너가 그 컨퍼런스에서 발표할 기회가 있을지도 몰라!  

Jieun: That would be amazing. But for now, I’ll focus on what I can do. Better late than never, right?  

지은: 그거 정말 멋질 거야. 하지만 지금은 내가 할 수 있는 일에 집중할 거야. 늦었지만, 아예 안 하는 것보단 낫지, 그치?  

Jisoo: Absolutely! Starting is the most important part. Everything else will follow.  

지수: 맞아! 시작하는 게 가장 중요한 부분이야. 나머지는 다 따라올 거야.  

Jieun: You’re right. I’ll look for some other opportunities to learn. Better late than never.  

지은: 맞아. 다른 배울 기회를 찾아볼게. 늦었지만, 아예 안 하는 것보단 낫지.  

Jisoo: That’s the spirit! You’re always so positive, Jieun.
